"If we had a medicine that delivered as many benefits as parks, we would all be taking it. Parks deliver cardiovascular benefits, fight loneliness, combat osteoporosis, counter stress, anxiety and more, and they do these things without adverse side effects and at minimal costs." Dr. Howard Frumkin, DrPH, MPHBacked by over a decade of groundbreaking research from our research collaborative and millennia of Indigenous knowledge, one truth is clear: nature heals. Spending time in nature reduces chronic disease, improves sleep and birth outcomes, strengthens community bonds, supports mental and physical well-being, and so much more—all while lowering healthcare costs.

Despite these proven benefits, public and private investment in nature, including parks, trails, playgrounds, and work and school grounds, continues to fall short.

That’s why we created The Northwest Nature and Health Coalition, a transdisciplinary group of thought leaders, movement builders, researchers, and healthcare providers dedicated to advancing research in nature and health, alongside equitable nature-based policies, programs, and practices. When we expand equitable engagement with nature, we support healthier and happier people, stronger and better connected communities, and a planet more resilient in the face of urbanization, shifting baselines of nature contact, and climate change.
