”Providing students opportunities to broaden their learning, and knowing that we make a positive impact in the trajectory of their careers has been the driving force behind our philanthropy. Our newest endowment focuses on the importance of learning about the intrinsic connection between human and planetary health.” - Usha Varanasi, PhDDrs. Usha and S. Rao Varanasi recognize the vital importance of the field of nature and health — both for the health and well-being of our communities and the planet itself. That is why they established the Usha and S. Rao Varanasi Endowed Undergraduate Nature and Health Fund. This fellowship will support UW undergraduate students who are studying the intersection of nature and health.

With their latest gift, the Varanasis have established their 10th endowment at the UW. We are continually inspired by their commitment to students and the community. Their giving reflects a shared belief in the power of higher education to broaden perspectives and prepare students for careers that increasingly cross disciplinary boundaries. In addition to their philanthropy, the Varanasis have served the university as affiliate faculty, volunteers and advocates, particularly within the College of the Environment and the College of Engineering, contributing their time and expertise alongside their financial support.

We are deeply grateful for Usha’s sustained commitment to advancing the field of nature and health. A true thought leader, she has co-authored several groundbreaking publications that helped bring national attention and momentum to this work. As an engaged member of our Steering Committee and Research Collaborative, Usha continues to move our conversations forward and strengthen the impact of our collective efforts. We are profoundly thankful for her insight, generosity, and service to the community. In these uncertain times, she and Rao remain a shining light and a source of inspiration.
