“We’re truly excited for the next phase of UW Nature and Health. Along with many others around the globe, our scientific investigations have demonstrated the link between nature and human well-being. As we continue to ask questions in our work about these reciprocal connections, we’re also moving to focus our efforts on translating this research into policies and programs that contribute to systemic change so that all people can benefit from nature.” - Dr. Gregory Bratman, Director of Nature and HealthIn 2014, Nature and Health began as a collaboration of researchers, healthcare providers, community organizations, outdoor schools, the outdoor gear industry, and local, state, and federal agencies who wanted to understand how time in nature affected human well-being. Through ten years of research, we have demonstrated the reciprocal relationship between nature and human well-being in different ways and from a variety of perspectives and approaches. Now that we better understand these connections, we’re on a mission to ensure that everyone can benefit from the healing and restorative power of nature.

In the next phase of work, we will continue our research and work closely with decision makers to shape public policies and programs that give everyone an equitable opportunity to engage with nature. We’ve updated our mission and vision to better reflect this focus.

Vision

We envision a world that understands and values the reciprocal relationship between nature and human well-being, and creates equitable engagement with nature and its benefits for future generations.

Mission

We seek to illuminate the connections between nature and human well-being through scientific investigation. We equip students and collaborate with decision makers and communities to inform policies and programs for equitable engagement and sustainable relationships with nature.
